Heanor Runners the Pride of Derbyshire

The Derbyshire County Athletic Association held the annual road relay competition at Pride Park over a 2 mile course.

On a hot and humid evening Heanors teams consisting of 5 mens and 2 ladies teams battled it out with the rest of the county hopefuls for a share of the medals

.

Ladies champions

Heanor’s top ladies team of Lisa Palmer 11.19, Jill Burke 12.26 and Glenda Alton 12.55 took the honours, beating their nearest rivals by over one minute and twenty seconds to become the 2008 Derbyshire road relay champions.

Heanor’s ladies ‘B’ team of Judith Gration 13.06, Donna Baker 16.55 and Tracie Morris 15.01 came a very respectable 5th in the senior category.

Silver for the men

The mens ‘A’ team had a battle from the word go and clawed a lot of time back to finish a comfortable 2nd and take silver medals, the team was made up of Steve Ashmore 10.17, Darren Ridout 10.01, Chris Rainsford 9.35, Jon Wainwright 10.16.

The ‘B’ team finished in 5th place, with all of them producing consistant runs on the night

Lee Perkins 10.50, Joe Rainsford 10.35, Alastair Hobday 10.40, Tony Weatherson 10.53.

Heanor mens ‘C’ team came in 10th place

Ryan Blake 13.06, Pete Edwards 12.11, Chris Riley 12.34, Russ Wilkinson 13.45.

The ‘D’ team finished 11th

Rob Rainsford 13.40, Nigel Scollin 13.01, Simon Baker 14.00, Chris Mellors 13.12.

The Heanor ‘E’ team was a non scoring team with a guest runner so were not included in the final results, had they been counted they would have finished 9th

James Tilford 13.46, Rich Simms (guest) 11.15, lee Perkins 11.06, Darren Ridout 11.10

Quick stuff

Heanor ‘A’ mens team also had 4 men in the top 10 quickest runners, with Chris Rainsford running the 2nd quickest mens time. The ladies ‘A’ team were all in the top 10 fastest ladies, with Lisa Palmer running 3rd fastest ladies time.

Heanor Runners do the double at Long Eaton

Heanor Running Clubs men and women pulled off a remarkable double at the Long Eaton 5 miler  to take the team titles and Glenda Alton the vet 45 age category prize.

Traditionally this race is run in scorching sunshine but on an unusually cool Sunday morning  the race unfolded with Phil Mitchell coming back in 5th place being closely followed by Steve Ashmore, Darren Ridout and Tony Weatherson with Kiz Davis having to withdraw with an achillies problem after 3 miles.

The men needing four to score and the women needed three.

Next in was Chris Riley, Glenda Alton, Steve Wardle, Yvonne Crawley, Rob Rainsford, Nigel Scollin, Tim Simpson, Jackie Hancock and Tracie Morris.

Heanor men have now won this team trophy for the past 5 years, but it was a first time for the Ladies team of Glenda, Yvonne and Jackie.

Joe Rainsford recorded 2nd in the 2 mile fun run which was all the more satisfying after a week in which he had four races in six days so he was hardly running at his best.

Heanor still top of the league

The summer road league series held the third race at Grassmore near Chesterfield last Tuesday and Heanors men took full advantage of a drastically reduced Heanor men’s team to show their mettle and keep Heanor on top of the pile. The scoring runners were Darren Ridout, Tony Weatherson, Steve Ashmore, Joe Rainsford, Lee Perkins, Luke James and Andy Nelson.

Other Heanor runners were Chris Riley, Steve Wardle, Rob Rainsford, Tim Simpson, Russ Wilkinson, Chris Mountford and Simon Baker.

The Ladies were led home by Jill Burke, Lizzie Taylor and Sam Liddle they were supported by Jackie Hancock, Tracie Morris, Sheridan Island and Donna Baker

All to play for at the penultimate race at Nutbrook Cricket Club on the 15th July.

BDL Individual standings after 3 races

Please find attached provisional standings after the first 3 league races - note that these scores are calculated on an average score basis whereas the final positions will be based on the best 4 (3 for juniors). Any athletes shown in italics need to complete both of the remaining fixtures to stay in contention for prizes. Those athletes at the bottom highlighted in yellow with a category of N/A are those with neither a date of birth or age group - please endeavour to provide these as they can then be included in the correct category above, and may therefore alter the positions of athletes of whom details are already available.

Directions to Teversal Grange for fixture 2: Sutton in Ashfield Harriers

As most of the clubs involved are based to the west of Sutton, I have written below the directions to Teversal Grange from Junctions 28 and 29 of the M1.

I have assumed that members of Mansfield Harriers will know their way to the venue. If not, you need to turn right onto Stoneyford Road after the New Cross traffic lights.

Teversal Grange is at the end of Carnarvon Street, marked by the red star on the left. The right turn that precedes it, Coppywood Close, also leads to Teversal Grange.

FROM JUNCTION 28

  • Take the A38 towards Mansfield.
  • After 1 mile, turn left at the 2nd set of traffic lights at the The Snipe pub, onto the B6023 (Alfreton Road)
  • Follow this road for 1 mile crossing a roundabout.
  • On reaching a T junction bear left and then immediately right. Go through traffic lights on to Lammas Road, (passing church and school on left).
  • Keep heading in the same direction through roundabout on to Priestsic Road. (Look for Asda Superstore on the right.
  • At the next traffic lights in 600m turn left on to Stoneyford Road.
  • Follow this road for 1 mile passing Quarrydale School on the right.
  • Go straight on at traffic lights through Stanton Hill.
  • Continue straight ahead at roundabout next to Netto store.
  • Go down the hill and look for Coppywood Close on the right after ½ a mile.
  • Follow the road round to the left until you reach Teversal Grange.

FROM JUNCTION 29

  • Follow signs for Mansfield travelling east on the A617.
  • Follow this road for 4 miles, (by which time it has become Chesterfield Road).
  • At Pleasley, take the 3rd exit from the roundabout continuing on the A 617 Chesterfield Road.
  • After 2 miles turn right at the Rufford Arms on to Abbott Road. (A6075)
  • Follow Abbott Road for 1.5 miles up the hill, (veterans of the old Mansfield Half Marathon course will be familiar with this stretch), through a set of traffic lights until it becomes Beck Lane.
  • At The Fox and Crown pub, turn right on to the B6014 (Mansfield Road).
  • Follow the B6014 for 2.5 miles until reaching a roundabout next to Netto store.
  • Take the 2nd exit staying on the B6014.
  • Go down the hill and look for Coppywood Close on the right after ½ a mile.
  • Follow the road round to the left until you reach Teversal Grange.

NB There is a new road that runs between the Pleasley roundabout and the top of Abbot Road – I think!

Message from Adam....

Dear All,

Hope you are well! Another good result, I am the 2008 British University Sports Association 10,000m track Champion.

The race was very very tactical and slow, we went through the first 3km in 9.36 and there was a lot of pushing going on or should I say I got pushed a lot. With 14 laps to go I had had enough of this so put a little surge in and broke the field up into only 8 runners in the lead group. By lap 12 there were just 3 of us as others drifted from the pack, I kept upping the tempo which was still relaxed for me which meant by lap 8 it was down to me and Jonathan Thewlis of Nottingham University last years Silver Medallist with a pb of 29.59.

I decided I had done enough work and eased back allowing Thewlis to reluctantly take the lead which incurred him constantly checking his shoulder for the 5 laps I let him lead. With 3 laps to go I put the foot
down and did not stop, it hurt and he stayed right on me and with 400m to go I was in a lot of pain, but I went again and the pace was too much for him I came home clear by 80 yards/7 seconds to win in a relatively slow time 30.57 which is a pb for me but am very aware based on my performance last weekend
at the National 12 Stage Relays that I am capable of 29.30 at this point demonstrating how tactical the race was and how important it is to be able to judge pacing and how to employ fast surges to overcome other opponents.

I have included a photo of me at the finish lapping 4th Place Phil Hinch whoran 32.13. A photo of me in agony trying to get oxygen back in and a photo of the medal presentation 1st Me 30.57, 2nd Jonathan Thewlis 31.04 3rd Ben Warren 31.36.

Heanor Runners shine in relays

Heanor Running Club put in a brilliant mens team performance in the English Road Running Association 12 stage relays at a warm and sunny Sutton Park, Birmingham on Saturday.
A fantastic effort from the team in their very first time of qualifiying for the finals (the top 25 clubs from the North, South and Midlands qualify), saw the Heanor runners pitting their wits against some of the countrys best road runners. Consistency was the order of the day with some solid runs from the Heanor lads, starting with Ben Radbourne on 1st leg coming back in 32nd, the team was holding a mid 30 position for most of the day eventually finishing in 38th place, the highest we got to was 31st. Before the start we thought a top 40 place was possible but we could never have expected to dip inside the top 40.
Ben recorded the fastest long leg for Heanor with Steve Ashmore the fastest short leg time.
The 12 stage relays consist of 6 long legs (5.4 miles) and 6 short legs (3 miles) alternating, starting with a long leg. Position after each leg in brackets.
A big thanks to the supporters from Heanor who made the trip, always popping up at various parts of the course with a word or two of encouragement.
Thanks also to the injured runners (Lee and Luke) who came to support their teamates, it truly was a team effort.

Summer League

The summer road race league started last Tuesday at Darley Park in Derby and once again the Heanor mens team totally dominated the race taking the first 4 positions and having all 7 scoring runners finish in the top 13 positions to total 42 points. However a severley depleted womens team could mange only 5th place to leave Heanor with a combined result in 2nd place overall after the opening race.

Heanor Runners qualify for 'National '

A successful day of road running at Catterick Army garrison in North Yorkshire will be remembered more for the appalling weather conditions which hit this event midway through the competition, the day started in bright but cold sunshine and gradually turned into blizzard conditions which made qualifiying even more satisfiying
Heanor men qualified for the 1st time in our history coming 14th (25 qualify) to pit their wits against the best 25 clubs from the midlands and the south.
Heanor Ladies are also entered for the National road relay finals in Birmingham on April 26th, to end a fantastic day for Heanor Running Club.

The Livingston Relays at Loughborough University on Easter Sunday this year incorporated the East Midlands Road Relays Championship award into the race,
Rob Rainsford wrote.

With the addition of East Midlands Championship status, combined with an extensive prize list on offer this year with the leading Senior and Veteran teams winning places at the ING Amsterdam 7.5k road race on Sunday 19th October, complete with three nights accommodation in the Dutch capital. Plus the winning junior teams and fastest male and female juniors gained places in the high profile BUPA Great Manchester Run on Sunday 18th May complete with accommodation in the elite athletes hotel.

With the over night wintry conditions melted away by the start time, the Livingston Relays, Leicestershire’s oldest road race that dates back to 1928 provided the Heanor teams with the welcome opportunity to get some well needed relay practise and finalise squads ahead of the territorial road relays championships that take place on Sunday 6th April in Catterick, North Yorkshire.

On the opening leg Heanors Ben Radbourne fresh from his superb run over 5k at the local lara race, set the scene for the ‘A’ team by coming back in 5th place in 15.26secs over the 3.3 mile course on the surrounding roads of the university campus.

However, Chris Rainsford soon asserted their authority as the 18-year-old moved into 1st place crossing the line in 15:45 to hand over to Phil Mitchell who matched Chris’s time and position to give anchor man Darren Ridout a slender lead.

What Heanor didn’t bargain for was Mark Powell of Owls AC he powered the Owls to victory comfortabley making up the deficit racing home in 14:47 to anchor the Owls home to victory in a combined time of 62mins 24secs as Heanor led by Darren Ridout  16.08 finished second in 63:04 with Barrow securing third in 65:22.

The ‘B’ team of Luke James 17.23, Stephen Ashmore 16.54, Jon Wainwright 17.57 and Alastair Hobday 17.31 finished 7th place with a combined time of 69.45 narrowley beaten by Beaumont RC by just 12 secs.

Heanor ‘C’ team comprising Joe Rainsford 17.16, Pete Ivens 17.59, Dave Probert 20.31 and Nigel Scollin 20.33 finished in a comfortable 13th place in the senior teams with a combined time of 76.19

In the Men’s Vets race the Heanor team of Chris Mellors 21.06, Rob Rainsford 21.33, Russ Wilkinson 21.21 and Chris Mountford 22.31 finished in 13th place, combined time of 86.31

In the Women’s race Charnwood AC’s team won the title finishing ahead of Heanor with a combined time of 54mins 07secs.

The Heanor ‘A’ team of Liz Radbourne 18.05, Glenda Alton 19.53 and London marathon bound Lisa Palmer 17.50 guided Heanor to the runners-up position in 55:48 ahead of third placed Barrow.

There was a tense finish for the ‘B’ team who were pipped by 4 secs into 7th place by Owls ‘A’ team.

Judith Gration 20.28, Sam Liddle 23.03 and Yvonne Crawley 20.10 were home with a combined time of 63.41

Heanor runners dominate Dronfield 10k

Last Sunday Heanor had 10 runners compete in the Dronfield 10k road race.

On a cold and windy morning it was never conducive for quick times, nevertheless Heanor had 5 runners in the top 9 places and had there been a team prize Heanor would have strolled it.

In 2nd place was Chris Rainsford 35.08, 3rd Darren Ridout 35.32, 7 Luke Seamer 36.31, 8 Alan Seamer 36.35, 9 Steve Ashmore 42.32, 56 Steve Wardle 42.32, 157 Rob Rainsford 46.39, 366 Teresa Brown 52.24, 611 Donna Baker 62.20 and 636 Sam Shipley 64.07

Luke Seamer won the under 18 prize, Darren and Chris took 3rd and 2nd overall.

Not to be outdone Joe Rainsford went and won the 2 mile fun run.

Inter-counties Cross Country

Over at Wollaton Park in Nottingham on Saturday, Heanor had 3 runners representing Derbyshire in the cross-country championships.

In the senior ladies Glenda Alton finished 200th in 35.11 over 8k, Jill Burke did not run due to other commitments.

A superb effort from all the runners in a field of 43 complete teams, we now turn our attention to the Livingston relays on Easter Sunday at Loughborough University

An open invitation from Rolls-Royce Harriers

The subject of an event in memory of John Thornhill was discussed last week, and Easter seems like a suitable timeframe. The idea is to get together in the morning to run the 'Riber 10', one of John's favourite routes, with a 4-5 mile easy-ish walk in parallel for those who don't run/ prefer to walk. WAGS are welcome as well! We will start at/ near Whatstandwell or Crich, and then gather at a local pub TBA, for a few drinks/ lunch/ whatever.

Thanks for your responses - Saturday 26 April is the date! This based on that most people were available for that date. The plan will be to park/ meet at Whatstandwell station (on the A6), then go from there. Start at 0930, to allow a leisurely jog/ walk.

Then we'll have some drinks/ food etc at the Derwent Hotel, walkable from the car park. I guess we would be there at 12 noon approx.
