With little other racing happening it was left to the Heanor Juniors to take centre stage at the 3rd match in the Derbyshire Mini League. As ever the performances and attitude of the youngsters left much to be admired.

Despite being the smallest club in the league all of the juniors got stuck and gave everything they had on the hottest day of the year.

Special mentions go to Archie for winning the 800m, Holly for her efforts in holding on to third in the 800m and Amber for winning the 200m.

Results are here:

Heanor RC junior athlete, Lily Winfield, scored a hugely impressive top-10 finish at the English Schools National Cross Country Championship at Wollaton Park last weekend.

The prestigious annual event is a breeding ground for future Olympians and international athletes and saw Lily enjoy the best race of her young running career so far.

Lily bounced back from her disappointing finish at the National Cross Country Championships the week before to finish 7th in the junior girls event as she delivered an excellent performance that matched her growing potential.

From the gun, Lily made quick progress through the 339-strong field before settling into 6th place just behind the main leading pack.

Heading into the final 500m, the fourteen-year-old dropped one position before being involved in a close battle with athletes from South Yorkshire and Somerset.

Lily held on to 7th – a remarkable improvement on her 75th-place finish in 2015. Just 24 seconds off the race winner Emily Williams from Northamptonshire, Lily also led the Derbyshire team to fifth overall.

With the first-8 finishers also being automatically selected to run for England, Lily can now look forward to representing her country and club in Falkirk on 19th March for the Home Countries International.

Coming off the back of a fantastic run the previous Saturday at Donington Park, HRC junior Ashleigh Armstrong also put in a great race to finish 84th.

Despite being a little slow out the blocks, Ashleigh moved through and ground out a very credible result, making a massive 160-position improvement from 2015 when she finished 244th.

Rounding off the yellow and blue representation at Wollaton Park was Mollie O’Hanlon. Mollie, who competed in the intermediate age category, was making her competitive comeback after sustaining an ankle injury at the Midland Counties XC at the end of January.

Mollie finished 341st in her first run since injury.

Nine Heanor Running Club members were in amongst the 7130 finishers at the Robin Hood Half Marathon last weekend as half of those competing in yellow and blue recorded new personal bests on a warm morning over the county border.

The race became something of a intra-club competition for Heanor RC’s ladies to see who would break their personal best by the most minutes as Laura Beth James-Hutchinson and Abbie Leivers both recorded lifetime bests for the 13.1 mile distance.

Laura’s form and confidence have grown unbelievably since she joined the club earlier this year and she dropped another personal best last Sunday to go with her 43:03 performance at the Wilne 10k earlier this month.

Laura recorded a personal best by over four-and-a-half minutes to clock 1:34:29 – a whole sixteen minutes faster than on the same course two years ago!

Abbie, meanwhile, has been in such smashing form of her own, most recently at the Lichfield 10k two weeks ago when she ran a PB of 47:03. Chopping almost three minutes off her previous best, Abbie ran 1:41:54.

The returning Ben O’Connell was the fastest performer for the yellow and blue in a race won overall by Run-Fast athlete Matthew Kimutai in 64:21. Ben ran almost twenty minutes quicker than at the Ramathon in June to finish 61st in 1:20:12.

Robin Clegg finished just outside his best in 1:25:49 whilst Carl Hughes, only four weeks on from his efforts at the BUPA Great North Run, ran almost six minutes quicker – and three minutes faster than on the same Nottingham course in 2013 – to run 1:27:14.

A personal best for Scott Wigman (1:41:50) saw him narrowly edge ahead of teammate Leivers whilst Jeff Everitt (1:47:47) and Gary Fletcher (2:11:07) recorded their fastest half marathon times of the year so far. Glenda Alton (2:25:04) completed the club’s efforts.

Not to be outdone, Dylan George grabbed an impressive third-spot out of over 2000 competitors and Lily Winfield saw off her Rushcliffe AC challenger by three seconds to take the ladies category honours in the Mini Marathon.

Promising junior athlete, Lily Winfield, continued her fantastic summer form to set another personal best at the Inter-Counties Track & Field meet in Hull last Saturday.

Running in the white vest of Derbyshire, the twelve-year old was selected to represent the county in the under 15 competition off the back of a super season that has seen her set personal bests in abundance. Lily’s July clocking of 5:01.09 for 1500m currently sees her ranked 13th in the country for her age.

Over just two laps of the track on Saturday, Lily continued her upward trend with another PB amongst quality opposition. The double-Derbyshire county champion smashed her 2:29.09 previous best by two seconds to finish third in 2:27.40 and can now look forward to the mud and hills of cross country.

Abbie Levers showed what rewards a consistent summer of training can deliver as she obliterated her personal best on the roads at the Lichfield 10k. Despite the course being a little hilly for her liking, the twenty-three-year old slashed over two minutes off her previous best to finish 12th female in 47:03.

Just one week on from his 1:32:52 performance at the Great North Run, Carl Hughes dipped inside the 40-minute mark in Lichfield to finish 36th in 39:58.

Full results HERE

A week on from running 32:02 at the Wilne 10k, Dale Annable stepped-up in distance to tackle the undulating Ashbourne Half Marathon. Looking to defend the title he won in 2013, Dale came up against quality opposition in the shape of England international Ben Fish and eventually placed second among the 230+ finishers.

Mirroring Dale’s efforts, thirteen-year old Dylan George also finished second in the fun run.
