Bronze at British Masters XC Relays for HRC

Jill, Lisa, Wendy

Heanor RC’s women added further British Masters success to their growing list of honours at Moorways Stadium, Derby on Saturday as the trio of Wendy Roethenbaugh, Jill Burke and Lisa Palmer secured bronze in the V35 standings at the British Masters Cross Country Relays.

Making their debut in the men’s V35 category, the quintet of Tim Robinson, Paul Mercer, Tony Weatherson, Gary Mellors and Paul Winfield finished 13th.

The yellow and blue ladies have enjoyed individual medals and team triumphs across various events over the last twelve months, including track silverware in the summer, relay success and road glory over distances from 5k to ten miles.

Wendy set the ball to success rolling on leg one on Saturday and came back seventh over the two-lap 3.1k course in 13:02. Jill (13:14) maintained the team’s seventh-place position before handing over to Lisa, who started her leg 34 seconds behind third-spot.

The British Masters 5k champion, however, went on to become only one of two women to go inside twelve minutes for the distance and clocked 11:24 to take the fastest leg honours.

Last year’s runners-up Dulwich Runners had enough in the bag to fend off Sheffield RC for the gold as the Heanor RC trio took what was in the end a comfortable bronze.

For the men, Tim’s opening stage effort of 11:15 ended the day as the club’s individual fastest leg. The race also proved to be a great warm-up for the two Pauls ahead of their PB-breaking exploits at the Worksop Half Marathon twenty-four hours later.

Gary clocked 11:47 in his first taste of British Masters action whilst team manager Tony ran 12:01 from his position at the heart of the team on leg three.
