A fantastic turnout of eleven teams for the Hairy Helmet Relays last Friday night ensured the perfect summer conditions were matched with bright performances from those in yellow and blue as the men’s and women’s “A” teams made it a double-victory at Darley Park, Derby.

The quartet of newly-crowned British Masters 5k champion Lisa Palmer – whose 11:41 ended the day as the fastest time – Louise Insley, Wendy Mullineux and Jill Burke also enjoyed a golden evening as they won out overall and took the “Female Vets over 160″ category.

The “JDs” quartet of Stuart King, Dale Annable, Joe Rainsford and James Mee saw the men win by just under a minute ahead of North Derbyshire on the club’s debut at the fourth edition of the Derwent Runners-hosted event. Stuart’s time of 9:59 was the only sub-10 clocking of the night over the two mile course and he walked away with the fastest-leg honours.

The Heanor RC senior women’s “A” string lived up to their “Lightning” billing as Issey Morledge, Lily Winfield, Laura James-Hutchinson and Lisa Palmer won the women’s event.

The latest event in the 2014 Club Championship also saw club stalwarts of the likes of Ben Radbourne, Donna Baker, Alastair Hobday and Chris Mellors in action.
